5. Corn Exchange (Alhóndiga)

The city’s public granary

This building dates back to the early 16th century, the time of the Catholic Monarchs. It originally served as a grain store for the neighbourhood, especially for farmers in times of shortage. Its status as a municipal building is reinforced by the presence of the city's coat of arms, displayed twice on the façade.

The whole structure of the building as a corn exchange has been preserved and since 1925 it has housed the Archivo Histórico Municipal (Municipal Historical Archive). There are more than 1,500 metres of record files and also rooms for cultural use.
