The Phoenix in a cage 

This 18th century building was the city's public jail until the beginning of the 20th century.  

Its decoration, very austere as a result of its use, is notable for the coat of arms of the Habsburgs that appears on the façade, and it has been declared an Asset of Cultural Interest 

The original prison had the “honour” of having among its inmates the illustrious playwright Lope de Vega, imprisoned in 1577. 

It features, in the entrance hall, the Romanesque doorway of a chapel dedicated to Saint Medel. This chapel no longer exists.  

Casa de la Lectura - Municipal Library with an extensive reading and cultural programme.
