It is one of the few manufacturing buildings from the 19th century which has been preserved almost perfectly intact. Located on the left bank of the river Eresma, it was built by the architect Juan de Herrera for King Philip II, who transformed it into a mint and introduced in Spain the coin minting technique through roller press.
