Old Main Synagogue / Corpus Christi Convent
Current Corpus Christi Convent
The former Main Synagogue was the religious centre of Segovia's Jewish community in medieval times. It is located between Judería Vieja Street, Puerta del Sol and the city walls, with access through a Gothic limestone arch in Corpus Christi Square.
Converted into a church in the early 15th century, it has undergone significant changes due to the fire that broke out on the night of 2 to 3 August 1899, which completely destroyed the Corpus Christi convent, reducing the church to its essential architectural elements.
The coffered ceiling and plasterwork, both survivors of the old synagogue, were devoured by the flames, and the few decorative elements that were not destroyed by the fire were lost during the unfortunate clearing of the rubble.
Today, only six small fragments from the capitals that crowned the pillars of the central nave remain. Thanks to the respectful restoration work that began immediately, the building had been rebuilt by 1902.
In 2004, an ambitious restoration project was completed, the main objective of which was to recover as much as possible of the plasterwork that originally decorated the synagogue.
It currently belongs to the Order of the Poor Clares, who are responsible for opening it to the public.
