Claustra Gate. Canonjías neighbourhood

Header image

The Puerta de la Claustra is situated on Calle de Velarde and served as the entrance to Segovia’s Claustra or Canonjías quarter, the residence of the cathedral canons until 1570. It is the only one remaining of the three gates that enclosed the quarter, which lay between the old cathedral and the Alcázar of Segovia.

Severely damaged during the siege of the city by the Comuneros in 1520, a new gate was built on the same site where it stands today. It retains traces of Renaissance sgraffito. Today it consists of two gates. The one on the right was opened in the early 20th century in the Neo-Romanesque style.
