House Of Ortega Lara

This building is listed in the National Assets of Cultural Interest

Originally two solidly built houses possibly dating from the 16th century, it was the knight of Alcántara, Juan de Ortega Lara y Angulo, who converted them into a single larger, more prominent house in 1702. His aim was to magnify the status of his family and its prosperity at the court of the Archduke Charles of Habsburg whom he had supported during the War of the Spanish Succession. The Archduke became the future emperor Charles VI.

Following the Archduke's defeat, the building fell into disgrace and eventually ended up in the hands of the Artillery which used it as barracks.

After being owned by different owners, it housed the Caja de Reclutamiento y Zona de Movilización de Segovia (Segovia Recruitment Office and Mobilisation Zone), and also served as the premises for a private academy for officers stationed in Segovia.

The building is the headquarters of the Provincial Historical Archive of Segovia, whose collections are also catalogued as an Asset of Cultural Interest.
