Antonio Machado House-Museum

Header image

Assigned to teach French at the Secondary School in Segovia, Antonio Machado arrived in the city on 25 November 1919. A few days later he came to live in the boarding house run by Doña Luisa Torrego. From then until he left it in 1932, he lived in this house at 5, Calle de los Desamparados.

With other artists and men of letters, he founded the Popular University in Segovia, which, years after the poet's death, acquired the house and prepared this simple museum. After some time, it was acquired by the Academy of History and Art of San Quirce, which turned it into a permanent memorial to the poet.

A visit to this old boarding house will take you back in time thanks to its portraits, mementos, furniture, images of Leonor and Guiomar, in short, the memory of his steps through the city and the atmosphere of the time.

The modest house is as bare as it must have been when Don Antonio lived there and still has the same furniture. The room that was his bedroom is intact and on the walls, to materialise his absence, different versions of his portrait have been hung, taken from old photographs or captured in oil paintings, drawings and posters bearing the signatures of Rafael Peñuelas, Jesús Unturbe, Álvaro Delgado and Pablo Picasso.

In the garden, among rose bushes and ivy, there is a copy of the bust of the poet sculpted by Emiliano Barral in 1920, as well as a ceramic panel by Julián López Parras.
