Antonio Machado House-Museum
Declared a Site of Cultural Interest
Appointed to the French department of the General and Technical Institute of Segovia, Antonio Machado arrived in the city on 25 November 1919. A few days later, he came to live in the boarding house run by Luisa Torrego. From then until he left in 1932, he had a room in this house at 5 Calle de los Desamparados.
Together with other artists and men of letters, he founded the Popular University in Segovia, which, years after the poet's death, acquired the house and set up this simple museum. Over time, it was acquired by the Academy of History and Art of San Quirce, which turned it into a permanent memorial to the poet.
Visiting this old guesthouse will transport you back in time thanks to its portraits, mementos, furniture, images of Leonor and Guiomar, in short, the memory of his time in the city and the atmosphere of the period.
The modest house remains as bare as it must have been when Don Antonio lived there, and still has the same furniture. His former bedroom is intact and, to symbolise his absence, different versions of his portrait have been hung on the walls, taken from old photographs or captured in oil paintings, drawings and posters bearing the signatures of Rafael Peñuelas, Jesús Unturbe, Álvaro Delgado and Pablo Picasso.
In the garden, among the rose bushes and ivy, you can see a copy of the bust of the poet sculpted by Emiliano Barral in 1920, as well as a ceramic panel by Julián López Parras.
