At night city has a striking outline with the pointed pinnacles of the cathedral, the tall towers of Romanesque churches, and the towers of nobles’ houses. A magical dance of allusions and the prominent is created by the exquisite lighting of monuments.
A night-time walk through the historical city centre gives us a new view of the city. There is a special touch, and a new colour and texture to the old facades with their sgraffito decoration. Visitors will discover new nooks and crannies which go unnoticed in daylight, new city scenes and a silence broken by the chiming of the many bells of the convents in the higher part of the city.
In the summer, terrazas (paved areas used by cafés and restaurants) take possession of Segovia’s squares and become busy meeting places for Segovians, holidaymakers, tourists who have just discovered the beauty of Segovia, and performers who after their act want to take in a different view of the city and its people.
Segovia’s long cultural programme from May to the end of September, including the Juan Bravo Theatre, the Titirimundi international puppet theatre show, Folk Segovia and Segovia’ summer of music, contributes to this night-time atmosphere.
A terraza in the Plaza Mayor
A real enticement for an enjoyable night out.
In addition to enjoying theatre and cinema, museums and exhibition centres, and the music festivals which are held throughout the year, it is well worth mixing with the people of Segovia and enjoying the nightlife of a surprising city.
Segovia is a good place for sceptics, for people who think it is just a quiet and peaceful place, because at night the city is quite the opposite. In the winter university students and in the summer tourists help to break this silence and to bring life to the streets without let-up.
The busiest nights are on Friday and Saturday when people begin quite early (for Spanish standards) with delicious tapas and later head on to the madness of noisy bars or go for a somewhat more relaxing coffee. But after four in the morning, the only option is to find an “after-hours” bar or club which is open until dawn.
Below you will find some background on the liveliest areas in Segovia.
The Old Part of the City – Paseo del Salón
In a stunning setting where the most varied atmospheres merge, there are typical Castilian tabernas (taverns, literally, but pubs or bars really) which are ideal for tapas, bars where you can delight in the latest music and even nightclubs for anyone who wants to stay out and make the night longer all along the Paseo del Salón. This is an area which on its own has everything for a great night out.
Las Rockas
In this area at the foot of the Aqueduct there are nightclubs to go to late into the night to enjoy a great atmosphere and the music of the day until dawn. What’s more, there are places to grab a bite before heading home.
San Millán
Throughout the length and breadth of this central area of the city there are a good number of bars and clubs for all tastes and ages with great atmospheres and good music.
Santo Tomás – Mahonías
This area is just stone’s throw from the Aqueduct and is an ideal spot to enjoy a fun game of darts or pool, whilst having an engaging chat and a drink. On the lower floor of the Mahonías shopping centre you can enjoy a lively night out in bars with a clearly student atmosphere.
Young, fun people who want to have a good time. That’s the kind of people you can find in Segovia, a city where different nationalities mix and there is a good balance on weekend nights. It is a beautiful city with a very entertaining nightlife.
